ANNOUNCING THE FOURTH WORLDWIDE WARDRIVE

WWWD4

12-19 June, 2004
THE FOURTH WORLDWIDE WARDRIVE IS OVER
The WWWD 4 is over. We will continue to accept results until tonight or
early tomorrow, but only access points collected between 12-19 June will
be counted.

I can't thank everyone that participated enough for all of your hard work
and dedication. Pending a complete scrub of the database we had nearly
300,000 APs submitted this year. I expect that number to go down some as
some of the results are likely outside of the date range but have slipped
through.

I will be posting the "official" results the next couple of days, after we have
had a chance to completely verify the submissions,
but since there were nearly 1500 files submitted during
the WWWD, that is going to take a little time.

This year's WWWD was hands down the best. That is in large part due to
the efforts of Bobzilla and the staff at WiGLE. They spent late nights in
the WiGLE lab hopped up on goofballs making last minute changes when I'd
say "hey, why don't we do this?!"

Seriously, thank these guys when you see them. They worked hard to make
this WWWD successful and did a fantastic job. When you run across one of
the WiGLE staff (perhaps at DefCon this year) make sure to buy them all
the beers that you can...or simply empty your wallets on their table and
say "All hail WiGLE."

For everyone that submitted, buy yourselves an icy cold (AFTER you are
done driving of course). If nothing else, the WWWD proves that this
community can come together to support what we believe is a good
cause...oh and maybe have a little fun along the way.

I'll be speaking on the WWWD at Black Hat this year so if you are going to
be out, make sure and stop by to say hey. I'll also be running the DefCon
12 WarDriving Contest again, so if you are going to be at DC, try to stop
by and say hello.

Thanks again for everyone's support of this project.

Chris

WarDriving: Drive, Detect, Defend by
Chris Hurley (Roamer)
Frank Thornton (Thorn)
Michael Puchol (Mother)

This is the book about WarDriving and wireless network security. Written by Chris Hurley, and co-authored by Frank Thornton (owner of Blackthorn Systems) and Michael Puchol, renowned experts on wireless computer networks. It exposes the truths and myths about WarDriving and wireless network security.

Foreword by Jeff Moss, President & CEO of Black Hat, Inc.

If any of you are planning on purchasing the book via the web, I'd appreciate it if you'd do it though his site. The standard Amazon price of $34.97 (30% off the suggested retail price!) still applies. Co-authors don't get a royality on tech books like this, so I'm hoping this will generate bit more income for Thorn from the book's success.

Also, Thorn has the sample chapter (Chapter 1) up on there so you can try before you buy.
