Proper Configuration for Linksys Access Points

Proper configuration of a Linksys Access Point can be accomplished in four simple steps:
        1.  Assign a Unique Service Set Identifier (SSID)
        2.  Enable and require use of128 bit Wired Equivalnet Privacy (WEP).
        3.  Filter access by MAC address.
        4.  Disable SSID broadcast.
This page will give step by step instructions for accomplishing these four steps.  It should be noted that no access point can ever be 100% secure.  These steps will, however, provide reasonable protection for the home user as well as a "No Trespassing" sign for WarDrivers.

Step 2.  Filter access by MAC address

At the main screen click on the adv

Ensure that you have the drop down boxes set to 128Bit and HEX as shown above.  You can either select your own key or have one generated for you.  The easiest way is to choose a strong password (combination of letters, numbers, and special characters) that is at least 12 characters and click the "Generate" button.  This will generate the four WEP keys as seen above.  When this is accomplished, click apply. It is important that the client (your wireless card) and the AP both use either HEX or ASCII. If you follow the instructions above you must set the client card up using HEX. It is also important to ensure that you are running the latest version of firmware for your wireless card as some older cards do not support HEX or may only support weaker encryption.

You are now ready to proceed to Step 3: Filter access by MAC address.
