Proper Configuration for Linksys Access Points

Proper configuration of a Linksys Access Point can be accomplished in four simple steps:
        1.  Assign a Unique Service Set Identifier (SSID)
        2.  Enable and require use of128 bit Wired Equivalnet Privacy (WEP).
        3.  Filter access by MAC address.
        4.  Disable SSID broadcast.
This page will give step by step instructions for accomplishing these four steps.  It should be noted that no access point can ever be 100% secure.  These steps will, however, provide reasonable protection for the home user as well as a "No Trespassing" sign for WarDrivers.

Step 3.  Filter access by MAC address

At the main screen click on the "Advanced" tab.  This will bring up the following screen:

Select the "Enabled" radio button for Filtered MAC Address.
Next select the "Only allow PCs with MAC listed below to access device" radio button.
Now put the MAC address of any wireless cards that you want to allow access to your AP in the text boxes.
Only cards with these MAC addresses will be allowed to access the AP.  It should be noted that this is not foolproof as MAC addresses are easily spoofed.  It will however reduce the risk from an attacker looking for a "target of convenience."
Click apply and then click the "Wireless" tab.  You are now ready for Step 4:  Disable SSID broadcast.
